Empty Bowls

  • Floyd County High School 721 Baker Street Southeast Floyd, VA, 24091 United States (map)

Instead of Sunday Gathering we will be helping Floyd County children by attending the annual Empty Bowls.

Empty Bowls aligns Floyd’s strength as an artisan community with a mission to support New River Community Action’s Floyd County Backpack Program. The program distributes food to eligible Floyd County school children to take home for the weekend.  Empty Bowls is the fundraiser for the program.

You can support a community activity that raises money to help the next generation, share a wonderful lunch with friends and neighbors and then get to take home your handcrafted bowl made and donated by local artisans!

Volunteer with Empty Bowls:

Friday, April 26th - They need: help cleaning bowls at 3:45pm in the High School cafeteria.

Sunday, April 28th - They need: servers to help serve soup and to keep up with ingredient cards to match the soup for people with allergies; new this year: we are looking for volunteers to help take soup/drinks/etc. on a tray to tables for our seniors or for parents with young children; soup “runners” prior to 11:30am start time to take soup from door drop off to the kitchen and make sure you get ingredient list and name so we can return crockpot; clean up at the end of event usually 2:00pm-2:30pm.

1-  Donations of crock pots of soup and bread.

Soup- Please put your name on each and every part of your crock pot. Leave your ladle at home.  We have plenty of them.  Any kind of soup is good, but please bring an index card with the basic ingredients of your soup on it.  Those with allergies or strict food preferences will appreciate that when choosing a soup.  We will display the card with the soup.  You may tape it to the lid of your pot.  Bring your soup hot or at least warm.  It takes a long time to heat up a cold soup in a crock pot and we need it near serving temperature when you bring it.

Bread- If you bring bread please tell me the amount you will bring, such as one loaf, or two, or whatever, and please bring it already sliced.  It can be cornbread or muffins as well as yeast breads or rolls. Knowing the amounts helps me know when I have enough donated food for the event.

2-  Please pick up your crock pot by 2:00pm or 2:30pm at the latest.  We plan to be out of the cafeteria by 3:00pm and we cannot leave anything in the school cafeteria.  Any crock pots left beyond 2:30pm will be taken to New River Community Action office and can be picked up there.

3-  Please RSVP with Glenda George (donglen@swva.net) as soon as possible so that I can know how much food will be coming and will have time to round up more food volunteers if needed.  For those who will be donating food, I will send out a reminder about a week before the event. And last but not least, I can’t tell you how much you are appreciated.  We couldn’t do this event without you!

Please deliver your food between 9:00am and 11:00am to the back door of the cafeteria on Sunday, April 28th.
