Welcome Song: Be Thou My Vision

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;

Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.

Thou my best thought, by day or by night,

Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom and thou my true word;

I ever with Thee, and Thou with me, Lord.

Thou My great Father, and I Thy true son

Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise;

Thou mine inheritance, now and always.

Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,

High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won

May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,

Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Call to Worship

Matthew Grim, Elder

1 My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father — Jesus Christ the righteous one. 2 He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.
— 1 John 2:1-2

Man of Sorrows (Hosanna)

Man of sorrows Lamb of God by His own betrayed

The sin of man and wrath of God has been on Jesus laid

Silent as He stood accused beaten mocked and scorned

Bowing to the Father's will he took a crown of thorns

Oh that rugged cross my salvation

Where Your love poured out over me

Now my soul cries out, "Hallelujah"

Praise and honor unto Thee

Sent of heaven God's own Son to purchase and redeem

And reconcile the very ones who nailed Him to that tree

Now my debt is paid it is paid in full

By the precious blood that my Jesus spilled

Now the curse of sin has no hold on me

Whom the Son sets free, oh, is free indeed! (Repeat)

See the stone is rolled away behold the empty tomb

Hallelujah God be praised He's risen from the grave!

Lenten Liturgy

The Creed: The Old Roman Symbol

I believe in God the Father almighty;

and in Christ Jesus His only Son, our Lord,

Who was born of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,

Who under Pontius Pilate was crucified and buried,

on the third day rose again from the dead,

ascended to heaven,

sits at the right hand of the Father,

whence He will come to judge the living and the dead;

and in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Church,

the remission of sins,

the resurrection of the flesh

(the life everlasting).

My Worth Is Not In What I Own (At the Cross)

My worth is not in what I own

Not in the strength of flesh and bone

But in the costly wounds of love

At the cross

My worth is not in skill or name

In win or lose, in pride or shame

But in the blood of Christ that flowed

At the cross

I rejoice in my Redeemer

Greatest Treasure,

Wellspring of my soul

I will trust in Him, no other.

My soul is satisfied in Him alone.

As summer flowers we fade and die

Fame, youth and beauty hurry by

But life eternal calls to us

At the cross

I will not boast in wealth or might

Or human wisdom’s fleeting light

But I will boast in knowing Christ

At the cross

Two wonders here that I confess

My worth and my unworthiness

My value fixed – my ransom paid

At the cross

Pastoral Point

Preschoolers are dismissed to the children’s lesson.

The Lord is My Salvation

The grace of God has reached for me, and pulled me from the raging sea

And I am safe on this solid ground, the Lord is my salvation

I will not fear when darkness falls, His strength will help me scale these walls

I’ll see the dawn of the rising sun, the Lord is my salvation

Who is like the Lord our God? Strong to save, faithful in love!

My debt is paid and the vict’ry won, the Lord is my salvation!

My hope is hidden in the Lord, He flowers each promise of His word

When winter fades, I know spring will come, the Lord is my salvation

In times of waiting, times of need, when I know loss, when I am weak

I know His grace will renew these days, the Lord is my salvation

And when I reach my final day, He will not leave me in the grave

But I will rise, He will call me home, the Lord is my salvation

Bridge

Glory be to God the Father, Glory be to God the Son

Glory be to God the Spirit, the Lord is our salvation

Glory be to God the Father, Glory be to God the Son

Glory be to God the Spirit, the Lord is our salvation

The Lord is our salvation

The Lord is our salvation

Message

Scripture

14 Now since the children have flesh and blood in common, Jesus also shared in these, so that through his death he might destroy the one holding the power of death — that is, the devil — 15 and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death. 16 For it is clear that he does not reach out to help angels, but to help Abraham’s offspring. 17 Therefore, he had to be like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in matters pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 For since he himself has suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.
— Hebrews 2:14-18

Discussion Questions:

  1. What comes to mind when you really think about death? What worries you? What comforts you? How have you heard it discussed in the church (whether good or confusing), and how does the truth of the Gospel minister to you?

  2. How would you describe, define, or characterize the devil? What are some popular misconceptions about this enemy? How have you seen the power of this “father of lies” at work in your world (and even in your own life)? How can believers resist him, with truth?

  3. Describe how Jesus has “reached out to help” us. Why do we need it, yet angels do not? What verses of Scripture anchor you to this reality—and secure you against “the power of death”?

Communion

Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.

Jesus Paid it All

I hear the Savior say,

“Thy strength indeed is small;

Child of weakness, watch and pray,

Find in Me thine all in all.”

Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain,

He washed it white as snow.

Lord, now indeed I find

Thy power and Thine alone,

Can change the leper’s spots

And melt the heart of stone.

And when before the throne

I stand in Him complete,

“Jesus died my soul to save,”

My lips shall still repeat.

Oh praise the One who paid my debt

and raised this life up from the dead (x4)

Benediction
