Gathering Song: Amazing Grace

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found;

Was blind, but now I see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

And grace my fears relieved;

How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils, and snares

I have already come;

’Tis grace that brought me safe thus far,

And grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,

Bright shining as the sun,

We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise

Than when we first begun.

Call to Worship

Kerry Spencer, Sojourn Elder

17 Therefore, I say this and testify in the Lord: You should no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thoughts. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them and because of the hardness of their hearts. 19 They became callous and gave themselves over to promiscuity for the practice of every kind of impurity with a desire for more and more.

20 But that is not how you came to know Christ, 21 assuming you heard about him and were taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to take off your former way of life, the old self that is corrupted by deceitful desires, 23 to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, the one created according to God’s likeness in righteousness and purity of the truth.
— Ephesians 4:17-24

Dear Refuge of My Weary Soul

Dear refuge of my weary soul,

On Thee, when sorrows rise

On Thee, when waves of trouble roll,

My fainting hope relies

To Thee I tell each rising grief,

For Thou alone canst heal

Thy Word can bring a sweet relief,

For every pain I feel

But oh! When gloomy doubts prevail,

I fear to call Thee mine

The springs of comfort seem to fail,

And all my hopes decline

Yet gracious God, where shall I flee?

Thou art my only trust

And still my soul would cleave to Thee

Though prostrate in the dust

Hast Thou not bid me seek Thy face,

And shall I seek in vain?

And can the ear of sovereign grace,

Be deaf when I complain?

No still the ear of sovereign grace,

Attends the mourner's prayer

Oh may I ever find access,

To breathe my sorrows there

Thy mercy seat is open still,

Here let my soul retreat

With humble hope attend Thy will,

And wait beneath Thy feet,

Thy mercy seat is open still,

Here let my soul retreat

With humble hope attend Thy will,

And wait beneath Thy feet

Jesus Paid it All

I hear the Savior say,

“Thy strength indeed is small;

Child of weakness, watch and pray,

Find in Me thine all in all.”

Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain,

He washed it white as snow.

Lord, now indeed I find

Thy power and Thine alone,

Can change the leper’s spots

And melt the heart of stone.

And when before the throne

I stand in Him complete,

“Jesus died my soul to save,”

My lips shall still repeat.

Oh praise the One who paid my debt and raised this life up from the dead (x4)

Living Hope

How great the chasm that lay between us,

How high the mountain I could not climb

In desperation I turned to heaven,

and spoke your Name into the night

Then through the darkness Your lovingkindness,

Tore through the shadows of my soul

The work is finished, the end is written,

Jesus Christ my Living Hope

Who could imagine so great a mercy,

What heart could fathom such boundless grace

The God of ages stepped down from glory,

To wear my sin and bear my shame

The cross has spoken I am forgiven,

The King of Kings calls me His own

Beautiful Savior I'm Yours forever,

Jesus Christ my Living Hope

Hallelujah, praise the One who set me free,

Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me

You have broken every chain,

There's salvation in Your Name

Jesus Christ my Living Hope

Then came the morning that sealed the promise,

Your buried body began to breathe

Out of the silence, the roaring lion,

Declared the grave has no claim on me (2x)

Jesus Yours is the victory!

Message

Scripture

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”

39 He answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah’s preaching; and look— something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and look — something greater than Solomon is here.
— Matthew 12:38-42

Discussion Questions:

  1. How does Jesus’ preaching increase our confidence in the Book of Jonah? Why does it matter that the Old Testament is proclaimed as history?

  2. What do you know about “the judgment”? What is the only hope for sinners? How does the sign of the Gospel message, as it has been believed in history, help us believe it and proclaim it today?

  3. In what ways could the church (and its people) be accused of “spiritual adultery”? How can Christians get back inside the boundaries of right faith? What repentance do you think is required in your religious culture, in your church, and in you?

Communion

Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.

How Deep the Fatherʼs Love

How Deep the Fatherʼs love for us, How vast beyond all measure

That He should give his only Son, To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss, The Father turns His face away

As wounds which mar the Chosen One, Bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders

Ashamed I hear my mocking voice, Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there, Until it was accomplished

His dying breath has brought me life, I know that it is finished!

I will not boast in anything, No gifts, no power, no wisdom

But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer

But this I know with all my heart, His wounds have paid my ransom

Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer

But this I know with all my heart, His wounds have paid my ransom
