Welcome Song: He Will Hold Me Fast
When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast
When the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast.
I could never keep my hold through life’s fearful path;
For my love is often cold; He must hold me fast.
He will hold me fast, He will hold me fast;
For my Savior loves me so, He will hold me fast.
Those He saves are His delight, Christ will hold me fast;
Precious in his holy sight, He will hold me fast.
He’ll not let my soul be lost; His promises shall last;
Bought by Him at such a cost, He will hold me fast.
For my life He bled and died, Christ will hold me fast;
Justice has been satisfied; He will hold me fast.
Raised with Him to endless life, He will hold me fast
‘Till our faith is turned to sight, When He comes at last!
This is My Father's World
This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; His hand the wonders wrought.
This is my Father’s world, the birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white, declare their Maker’s praise.
This is my Father’s world: He shines in all that’s fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass; He speaks to me everywhere.
This is my Father’s world. O let me ne’er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.
This is my father’s world, Why should my heart be sad?
The Lord is King: let the heavens ring! God reigns; let earth be glad!
This is my Father’s world: the battle is not done:
Jesus Who died shall be satisfied, and heaven and earth be one.
But For the Cross of Christ
What is the truth that ever anchors me
Amidst the waves of all my guilt?
That Christ has shed His blood and pardoned me
At the cross, at the cross.
He bore my sin; I bear His righteousness.
Oh, what a glorious exchange.
The wrath of God laid on the spotless Lamb-
Oh, what grace, oh what grace!
Behold the cross! There is no greater love.
Heaven’s Son laid down His life for us.
Oh, my soul would be lost with no hope to find,
But for the cross of Christ.
How do I walk with humble confidence?
I look to Christ who set me free.
He sealed my hope and my inheritance
At the cross, at the cross.
When sin prevails I claim His cleansing blood.
When filled with fear I claim His peace.
Though I am weak, I stand in victory
In His name, in His name.
One day I'll stand before the King of kings.
One day I'll see my Savior's face.
For Jesus rose, death lost its bitter sting
Once for all, once for all!
Man of Sorrows (Hosanna)
Man of sorrows Lamb of God by His own betrayed
The sin of man and wrath of God has been on Jesus laid
Silent as He stood accused beaten mocked and scorned
Bowing to the Father's will he took a crown of thorns
Oh that rugged cross my salvation
Where Your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out, "Hallelujah"
Praise and honor unto Thee
Sent of heaven God's own Son to purchase and redeem
And reconcile the very ones who nailed Him to that tree
Now my debt is paid it is paid in full
By the precious blood that my Jesus spilled
Now the curse of sin has no hold on me
Whom the Son sets free, oh, is free indeed! (Repeat)
See the stone is rolled away behold the empty tomb
Hallelujah God be praised He's risen from the grave!
Scripture reading
“1 Jonah was greatly displeased and became furious. 2 He prayed to the LORD, “Please, LORD, isn’t this what I said while I was still in my own country? That’s why I fled toward Tarshish in the first place. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in faithful love, and one who relents from sending disaster. 3 And now, LORD, take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.”
4 The LORD asked, “Is it right for you to be angry? ”
5 Jonah left the city and found a place east of it. He made himself a shelter there and sat in its shade to see what would happen to the city. 6 Then the LORD God appointed a plant, and it grew over Jonah to provide shade for his head to rescue him from his trouble. Jonah was greatly pleased with the plant. 7 When dawn came the next day, God appointed a worm that attacked the plant, and it withered.
8 As the sun was rising, God appointed a scorching east wind. The sun beat down on Jonah’s head so much that he almost fainted, and he wanted to die. He said, “It’s better for me to die than to live.”
9 Then God asked Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”
“Yes, it’s right! ” he replied. “I’m angry enough to die! ”
10 And the LORD said, “You cared about the plant, which you did not labor over and did not grow. It appeared in a night and perished in a night. 11 So may I not care about the great city of Nineveh, which has more than a hundred twenty thousand people who cannot distinguish between their right and their left, as well as many animals?”
”
Discussion Questions:
What “gospel” truths does Jonah know about God? (See v. 2.) How do they inform the Gospel we know? Why does that message matter for those who don’t know it yet?
Describe a time God has gotten your attention: for repentance, for a life-change, for a calling. What miracle moments changed your life’s trajectory? How have those moments rearranged your life’s concerns?
How does your life—and the life of the church—reflect God’s kind of compassion for the nations? Is there evidence that we are thinking (and behaving) more like Jonah? Why should the abject lostness of the wider world stir us for God’s callings?
Doxology
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Amen.
Here Is Love
Here is love, vast as the ocean, loving kindness as the flood
When the Prince of Life, our Ransom, shed for us His precious blood
Who His love will not remember? Who can cease to sing His praise?
He can never be forgotten, throughout Heaven's eternal days
On the mount of crucifixion, fountains opened deep and wide
Through the floodgates of God's mercy, flowed a vast and gracious tide
Grace and love, like mighty rivers, poured incessant from above
And Heaven's peace and perfect justice, kissed a guilty world in love
On the morn of resurrection, mercy filled the thirsty grave
Where the stone of death burst open, springs of life flowed unrestrained
Love no heart could ever measure, joy no sorrows will outrun.
Rush upon the soul believing in the risen, reigning Son.
O this love, vast love of Jesus bids us come and drink and live.
To this weary world of longing, what more could our Savior give?
Now to Christ who fully loved us and who freed us from our sin,
Be all glory and dominion, everlasting praise to Him.
