Rock of Ages
Rock of ages cleft for me let me hide myself in Thee
Let the water and the blood from Thy wounded side which flowed
Be of sin a double cure cleanse me from its guilt and power
Not the labors of my hands can fulfill Thy law’s demands
Could my zeal no respite know could my tears forever flow
All for sin could not atone. Thou must save and thou alone
Nothing in my hand I bring. Simply to the cross I cling
Naked come to thee for dress. Helpless look to Thee for grace
Foul I to the fountain fly. Wash me Savior or I die
While I draw this fleeting breath when my eyes shall close in death
When I soar to worlds unknown see Thee on the judgment throne
Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee
Rock of ages cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee
Come Thou Fount
Come, thou Fount of every blessing,
tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, mount of thy redeeming love
Here I raise mine Ebenezer; hither by thy help I'm come
And I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood
O to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be
Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above
Come, thou Fount of every blessing,
tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise
Victory in Jesus
I heard and old, old story how a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary to save a wretch like me.
I heard about His groaning, of His precious blood’s atoning
Then I repented of my sin, Christ won the victory.
Oh victory in Jesus! My Savior forever!
He sought me and bought me with His redeeming blood
He loved me ere I knew Him and all my love is due Him
He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood.
I heard about His healing; all his miracles revealing
That He alone can save a soul and set the captive free
I’m happy in His promise, how soon He’s coming for us
And home with Him I’ll sing again, “Christ won the victory!”
I’ll tell the old, old story till my Savior comes from glory
I’ll tell of all the Lord has done to set this sinner free
That all who will believe Him, by faith, can still receive him
And share in that redemption song: “Christ won the victory!”
How Deep the Father’s Love for Us
How Deep the Fatherʼs love for us, How vast beyond all measure
That He should give his only Son, To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss, The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One, Bring many sons to glory
Behold the man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice, Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held Him there, Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life, I know that it is finished!
I will not boast in anything, No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart,
His wounds have paid my ransom
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart,
His wounds have paid my ransom
Sermon Texts
“12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
24 “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:
“ ‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.”
31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.”
Discussion Questions:
What is the significance of the Jewish Passover? What was Israel remembering and commemorating? In what ways does that ritual help us understand Jesus’ sacrifice? How does it relate to the Gospel? (See Exodus 11-12.)
How should we understand the symbols of the bread and the cup? Why is the church instructed to remember Him this way? How do they help us “see” Jesus—and share Him? (See 1 Corinthians 11:23-26.)
Why is “scattering” a threat to your faith? How do we turn around from being “all talk”? What are the means God has given us, for gathering and for identifying with Jesus’ death? (See Mark 14:27-31.)
Doxology
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Amen.
Blessed Assurance
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine.
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending, bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest;
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
