Discussion Questions:
Why is it important to remember that God’s big fish is a miracle (Jnh. 1:17)? How have we tried to outsmart the miracle? Why is trusting God’s miracles—for Jonah, and for us—a better apologetic?
What details stand out in Jonah’s prayer? Why does it resemble so many Psalms? What prayers, verses, and truths have mattered in your own prayer life? How does this reemphasize our need for biblical devotion?
What worship commitments does Jonah make, in response to God’s salvation? (See vv. 8-9.) How might these apply in our own lives? In what ways are you living into them—and in what ways do you still need to grow?

Discussion Questions:
In what ways are the lost people around you crying out for help? What religious things are they trying? How are we—Christians, your church, and you personally—engaging them? (And what are we missing or ignoring?)
What does an authentic Christian identity look like? (Compare with Jonah’s out-of-order Hebrew identity, v. 9.) What does an out-of-order Christian confession look like? Which seems more prevalent in the church?
What do you know that your lost, hurting, crying-out neighbors need? How can you share it with them?
“THE JONAH PROBLEM”

Discussion Questions:
What are your big questions about the Book of Jonah? What things make it hard to believe? What, in Scripture, helps you to know it is true? (See 2 Kings 14:23-27, Matthew 12:38-41.)
Consider this statement: “Jonah is the first-ever foreign missionary.” How does this affect your reading of the text? What lessons can be learned from Jonah’s calling by the believing church—specifically regarding who we might be sent to, for mission?
How is Jonah a “negative example”? What does his biography teach us to expect, when we run from God’s callings? How does this help us understand the “silliness” of the Book of Jonah?
